What is greenhouse gas capture?

Landfill waste releases methane, a greenhouse gas at least 28 times stronger than CO2. Landfill gas projects capture it at the source, avoiding emissions by burning it or converting it into energy.

Project summary

In Cambodia, over 85% of the rural population lacks access to electricity, creating significant barriers to economic development and modern living standards. The Biodigester Program addresses these challenges by introducing biodigesters that convert livestock and agricultural waste into clean biogas and organic fertiliser. This innovative solution reduces dependence on polluting fuels, mitigates deforestation, and enhances the quality of life for rural communities.

Benefits

Climate

The program significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by replacing biomass and fossil fuels with biogas, a clean and renewable energy source. By using agricultural waste for energy production, it prevents methane emissions from decomposing organic matter, supporting Cambodia’s contributions to global climate change mitigation.

Nature

The biodigester program helps curb deforestation by reducing reliance on firewood and other biomass fuels for cooking. Additionally, the organic fertiliser produced by the system decreases the need for chemical fertilisers, protecting soil health and reducing harmful runoff into surrounding ecosystems.

People

The program directly improves the lives of rural households by providing access to clean energy and organic fertiliser. Families save time and money by no longer needing to acquire fossil fuels or chemical fertilisers. Women and children benefit from healthier, smoke-free cooking environments, while farmers experience increased crop yields and greater income. With over 27,000 biodigesters built, the initiative has positively impacted more than 153,000 users, creating a foundation for sustainable energy and improved well-being.

SDGs supported

Zero Hunger

The program improves agricultural productivity and food security by providing organic fertiliser, enhancing soil quality, and increasing crop yields, which boosts farmer incomes and supports sustainable farming practices.

Affordable and Clean Energy

By converting agricultural waste into clean biogas, the program ensures access to affordable, sustainable energy for rural households, reducing reliance on polluting biomass and fossil fuels for cooking and lighting.

Climate Action

The program mitigates climate change by lowering greenhouse gas emissions through reduced deforestation and the use of renewable biogas, preventing methane emissions from decomposing organic waste. Methane is over 80 times more potent than CO₂ over 20 years.
