What is LFG?

As waste decomposes in a landfill, oxygen-free (anaerobic) conditions cause it to release methane. With a global warming potential at least 28 times greater than CO2 and a short (12-year) atmospheric life, methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is a key contributor to global climate change. Landfill gas (LFG) projects capture this methane at the source, avoiding emissions either by combusting it directly or converting it into energy.

Project Summary

The project is located at the Shizaiqian Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfill Site in Luojiang District, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, China. Constructed and operated by Quanzhou BCCY New Energy Co., Ltd., the facility features a comprehensive LFG extraction and treatment network connected to five 1 MW gas engine generator sets (5 MW total rated capacity). The system collects methane generated from decomposing organic waste and converts it into grid-connected electricity, delivering both environmental protection and regional clean power.

Landfill Operations Commence

The Shizaiqian MSW landfill site begins accepting municipal waste in Luojiang District, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province. The site is designed with an effective waste capacity of 3,900,000 m³ and a daily processing capacity of 810 tonnes.

Benefits

Prevents atmospheric release of methane and displaces grid electricity dominated by fossil fuels, achieving 268,047 tCO₂e of avoided emissions in its first two years and an estimated 687,053 tCO₂e across its 10-year crediting period.

Sustainable development goals

These Sustainable Development Goals show the wider outcomes this project supports beyond its headline impact.

Affordable and Clean Energy

Supplies clean, renewable electricity to the Eastern China Power Grid (ECPG) from recovered landfill gas, supplementing local municipal energy needs.

Decent Work and Economic Growth

Created 5 permanent full-time operational jobs through Quanzhou BCCY New Energy Co., Ltd. for project operations and environmental monitoring.

Climate Action

Prevented the release of 268,047 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent into the atmosphere during its initial reporting period through active methane destruction and fossil fuel displacement.

Verification

These partners help deliver the project and verify its impact.
